I am firmly opposed to relying on fossil fuels for electricity generation, particularly when lower-carbon alternatives are increasingly available. The current trend—especially in the United States—of using gas-fired generators to meet the rapidly growing electricity demands of data centres is not, in my view, a sustainable or responsible path forward. Although natural gas may provide reliable power in the short term, expanding dependence on it risks locking in additional greenhouse-gas emissions and long-lived infrastructure at a time when energy systems should be moving toward cleaner sources. I have limited visibility into future electricity demand, the expected utilization of the proposed facilities, and the alternatives considered. Without clear, credible projections and a transparent assessment of environmental, economic, and reliability impacts, it is difficult to determine whether this project is necessary or justified.
